Description Briscoe's Tips

Toothache Plant

Acmella oleracea

This 'eye popping' herb has been used for generations to manage the pain of a toothache. It provides an effective numbing sensation, said to last only about 15 minutes, when you chew the leaves or the flower buds. It also stimulates saliva production. The herb contains spilanthol, an antiseptic alkaloid whose analgesic activity reduces sensitivity to pain.

Toothache Plant Medicinal Properties
Toothache Plant has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti fungal properties that make it an important medicinal herb. It is said to fight oral bacteria, combats skin fungi (particularly helpful in fighting both ringworm and athlete's foot), improves skin tone by strengthening collagen, boosts the immune system and supposedly improves sexual arousal and performance.

As a culinary herb, it is safe to eat and should be added to salads and cooked in dishes as you would any leafy green vegetable.

A member of the Asteraceae family, which includes asters and daisies, this annual herb has lovely bronze - green foliage with olive shaped yellow flowers with a burgundy eye. Native to Brazil and other tropical regions, it is not tolerant of frost but can be grown indoors.
