Description Briscoe's Tips

Tricolor Sage Plants

Salvia officinalis

Sages are wonderful herb plants and the variegated leaves of 'Tricolor' Sage are a gorgeous accent in herb gardening, in a container, or as a garnish. We love it in the garden planted with other herb plants with lavender flowers such as Hyssop. It has an irregular pattern of variegation and has an aromatic, earthy spice scent.

Tricolor Sage works well in pots and containers especially during months of extreme cold. Use it as an accent plant when creating your planters. It grows tall, up to 2 feet. It is great in full sun and tends to be drought tolerant.

Historically thought to inspire longevity and immortality, Tricolor's genus name 'Salvia' is derived from the Latin word for "salvation". Sage has also been used to treat respiratory problems, coughs, sore throats and as an appetite stimulant.

Also a fine culinary herb, Tricolor tastes great as a seasoning for poultry, omelets and soups.

Uses: An aromatic herb, Tricolor Sage not only looks and smells great, but is the traditional Sage used to flavor poultry, omelets and soups.

Tips: Tricolor isn't the hardiest of Sage varieties so either mulch and cover during extremely cold periods or transplant to a nice container and keep it warm indoors.
