Evening Fragrance Datura Plants

Datura inoxia

Datura 'Evening Fragrance' really sums up the unique aspects of this beautiful tender perennial -- the plant produces beautiful trumpet-like blooms that emit an intoxicating fragrance at night. Perfuming the night with its sweet scent, 'Evening Fragrance' is much like a Moonflower in the way that it only flowers when the sun sets or on cloudy days. Growing in a shrubby habit, this Datura can be quite invasive and is prohibited in many states because of its ability to self seed and spread quickly. Though friend to many because of its beauty and aromatic qualities, this plant can also be quite the foe to farmers. Datura is a highly toxic crop contaminator that has been known in cases of cotton crops, to overwhelm and cross pollinate the harvest, rendering it unusable.

Daturas have been long used in various Native American tribes as a hallucinogenic used for clairvoyance or in rites of passages rituals for a spiritual perspective. The delirium inducing properties are similar to the toxic makeup of Nightshade and the effects are closely related. Extreme confusion, hallucinations, hysteria, and death are all symptoms of Datura poisoning. The seeds are the most poisonous part of the plant and are deadly to humans and animals. In ancient Aztec culture, the plant was used as a medicinal pain killer and applied to wounds in a poultice or salve but only the most highly experienced medicine men were trusted with this tender perennial, as they could apply a nonlethal dosage.

Also known as "the devil's trumpet" Datura 'Evening Fragrance' has velvety gray-green foliage that is covered in fine hairs, and its blooms range from lavender to white, and typically have a soft violet hue around the rim of the trumpet-like flower. These make great container plants and are best grown close to your patio or porch so you can enjoy their lovely sweet scent!

*All parts of these flowering plants are poisonous, including seeds. Exercise extreme caution around children and pets.*

We do datura every year, one in a large pot outside the front door and one in an open spot just slow the deck in the rear.  Sometimes we grow our own from seed and some years we skip the hassle and buy from growers exchange.  The plants are always vigorous when they reach us and do very very well.

When I received my Datura it was very healthy and huge for a mail order plant. It adapted very quickly to it’s new (medium) sized container on my patio. Within a week, it started blooming, and every evening since! I am growing it as a part of a ‘Moon Garden’  for night pollinators.

The only con, which I agree with others, is that the flowers do not have any smell at all which is rather disappointing but overall, the beautiful flowers make up for the lack scent.

I highly recommend this plant and company!

Some of the strongest looking plants I've recieved.  Even the ones that dropped a couple yellow leaves immediately started growing new ones.  I expect they'll do very well based on my Datura 'Purple Ballerina' experience.

The Datura plants I received were in great shape and are growing wonderfully.  I am always amazed at the wonderful packaging that you do.  As a geometry teacher I have saved your packaging and plan to discuss the "mechanics" of your packaging genius with my students.  I would be interested in any information you might have "behind the scenes" regarding the math of your packaging from a business viewpoint.
