Chives Plants

Allium schoenoprasum

We love to grow culinary herbs and chives are a mainstay in your herb gardening efforts. This herb plant is very versatile and extremely easy to grow.

Chives have a wonderfully mild onion flavor, rich but subtle, and perfect for any dish that does not need to be overwhelmed with strong tastes. The thick blade-like leaf of this Allium is suited for drying or freezing, but is best suited for fresh use. The flowers can be used as a garnish, or eaten in a light stir-fry.

Revered by the Romans as a medicinal herb used for curing sunburns, modern science proves this to be true because of the naturally occurring properties in the plant. Bioflavonoids found in chives and other cousins within the Allium family, including garlic and onions, are organic antioxidants found within plants. Currently, research is being conducted to prove their success at reducing certain types of cancers.

Bloom: Lavender, Mid Spring - Summer

Uses: Chives have a flavorful, yet subtle onion-like taste, and are a great compliment to omelets, potatoes, meats and more!

Tips: Heat tends to lessen the flavor of Chives, so when cooking, add them last or as a garnish once your dish is complete. They do not hold their flavor for long when dried, so use as soon as possible for best culinary results.

Got To Have This In Your Garden May 1, 2017

I cant remember how many herb plants we ordered but it was a bunch.  The garden is growing great with the exception of our chive plants.  I'm guessing that I expect these little devils to grow, thicken and produce fast.  I think patience is in order here.  The chive plants seemed a little younger upon arrival than all of the others.   This plant is producing a little quicker than our Geisha Chives so that huge baked potato with butter, sour cream and these green morsels of flavor was just wonderful with this garnish.
