Blue Borage Plants

Borago officinalis

Also known as the "Herb of Gladness", this refreshing culinary herb also makes a wonderful companion plant. Borage bears hundreds of small, star-shaped blue flowers atop thick stems suitable for cutting, which are edible. The mild cucumber flavor is perfect for salads and garnishes.

Borage has a long harvest period and its seed oil is a rich source of gamma-linolenic acid. This ornamental herb is perfect for the flower garden and is a wonderful partner to any of your flowering annuals. Blue borage pairs well in the garden with many food crops, including tomatoes, berries and squash, and is said to actually improve the taste of fruits and vegetables growing nearby. Considered the "magic bullet" of companion plants, Borage repels unwanted insects, and also attracts predatory insects to keep harmful pests at bay.

This self-seeding plant will spread easily with plenty of sun, rich soil and protection from the wind.

Features
Zones: Annual

Size: 36"H x 18"S

Light: Full to Part Sun

Bloom: Blue, Summer

Uses: Bears small, star-shaped, blue flowers that are fragrant and edible. Borage tastes a little something like cucumber or celery and can be used in salads, teas and iced drinks, or candied for desserts. We like to freeze them in ice cubes for a lovely addition to summer drinks. You can even try adding a few leaves to your favorite glass of wine for a change of pace!

Tips: An anti inflammatory, Borage also makes a great bath infusion for relaxing swollen joints and muscles. This is a vigorous self seeding plant, so container planting might be good to contain its spread. Otherwise, deadhead flowers before the go to seed, or let them take over a part of your yard to attract butterflies and honeybees!

Replacement Plants June 3, 2019
Reviewer: Susan Ussery from Brooks, GA United States
The first plant I ordered arrived with most of the leaves broken off.  It ended up with a small green tip left so I planted it hoping it would survive.  It didn’t so I ordered two others to replace it.  They arrived with their leaves intact and are growing nicely in my garden.  This review is for the replacement plants only.

Blue Borage June 3, 2019

Lost one plant during shipping due to package mishandling.  Box was damaged and  growing medium had spilled out from around  that plant. Tried to save it but it was to dried out. I replanted the other three plants in Wal Mart shopping bags using commercial grow mix. They are doing great. I use Borage to  keep the Moth that lays Horn Worm eggs away from my Tomatoes. They confuse the Moth with their scent. So it can't find anywhere to lay their eggs. Sounds crazy but it works.
