The 5 Categories of Ayurvedic Herbs

Ayurvedic herb plants have been used for millennia in Ayurveda, the traditional Hindu practice of medicine. Ayurvedic medicine originated in India in ancient times and predates writing. It was passed down by word of mouth for generations before the Sanskrit written language was developed. The Great Trilogy of Ayurvedic books were written over 2,000 years ago.

Ayurveda takes a holistic approach to preventing, treating and curing diseases and common ailments. The basic premise of Ayurveda is that the human body and the universe are one. Therefore, Ayurvedic plants that grow naturally are the best way to help the body withstand invading diseases and heal itself from within when an accident or injury occurs. These Indian herb plants are used in Ayurveda to help keep the body’s doshas in balance. Doshas are the energies that come from the five elements of earth, fire, water, air and ether (space). According to Hindu belief, three of them, air (Vata), fire (Pitta) and water (Kapha), are found in the human body.

Categorizing Ayurvedic herbs is difficult since many of them fit within more than one category. For example, Aloe Vera is used not only as a soothing skin balm or lotion, but also as a healing substance for skin irritations, sores and burns, including sunburns. For purposes of this page, the five basic categories of plants are healing, preventative, repelling, soothing and treating. Please also visit our Medicinal Plants and Herbs page.
