Vietnamese Coriander Plants

Persicaria odorata

Known as ‘Rau Ram’ in Vietnam, this culinary herb has a wonderful spicy flavor with hints of cilantro. In fact, its excellent flavor and ease of growth make it a good Cilantro or Mint substitute. Lending a slightly peppery spice to dishes, compliments meats like pork very nicely. Terrific for flavoring stir frys and curries, though it tastes similar to Cilantro, it is not the same as the Cilantro plant's seeds, which are also called Coriander.

Vietnamese Coriander has green, pointed leaves that have a good spreading habit in the garden. It can be potted and grown indoors, but will stop producing once it outgrows the space allotted for it, so make sure to provide it with lots of room to grow with a bigger pot or container.

Vietnamese Coriander prefers a moist environment, which makes it a great plant for areas near water gardens or places in your garden that tend to hold water longer.

thriving Vietnamese coriander May 31, 2017

The plant arrived in excellent condition and is growing well in a self-watering container on a south-facing window sill.  I have been able to harvest a few leaves for cooking, and the taste is delicious.  I hope it continues to thrive and produce leaves for a longer period than some other Vietnamese coriander plants I've tried.

Arid Attempt April 18, 2017

The plants arrived in great shape and so far they are doing well. They are planted in my raised beds with drip irrigation. Our environment is high desert with very low humidity so I am monitoring them closely and keeping the soil damp. A couple of 90 degree days so far this spring, we will see how they do when June comes and the extreme heat takes over. Have not tried any of the herb as of yet, waiting until they are a bit more robust.
