Description Briscoe's Tips

Satureja hortensis

Summer Savory, like its Winter hardy cousin, is a member of the Mint family is a beautifully aromatic herb that lends a huge hand in the kitchen.

More commonly used to cook with than Winter Savory because of its subtle sweetness, Summer Savory has a mild Thyme-like taste. Summer Savory also makes a great salt substitute and is very flavorful culinary herb used in soups, stuffings, desserts and for breading meats and fish. Very well known in Eastern European cuisine as a popular table condiment and key ingredient in traditional dishes, it is also an element in the French Herbes de Provence seasoning. In German, Summer Savory is known as "bohenkraut" meaning, "bean herb", for its common compliment to bean dishes.

Once grown near domestic bee hives for its fragrant aromatic qualities, Summer Savory is also known to reduce the pain and swelling of bee stings and bug bites when applied to the skin. More likely found in the kitchen than the medicine cabinet, both forms of Savory have been used to treat digestive and respiratory issues because of their natural antiseptic and carminative properties.

Summer Savory has traditionally been used as an aphrodisiac and belief was that the sweet aroma would intoxicate lovers and revitalize the body.

The summer savory plants were a little leggy at arrival. I am thinking it is not worth it to order live plants after March.
