Moonflower Vines

Ipomoea alba

Moonflowers, or commonly known as "Moon Vines", are quick, eager growers that will climb anything within reach. They make a great natural screen for unsightly utility boxes and outlets, and are beautiful decorations to your mailbox, fence, trellis or garden wall. Sometimes they are planted with white datura or purple datura. These twining vines are native to the tropics and do best in full sun in warmer zones. Considered invasive in their native zones because of their fast, reaching habit, Moonflowers are sometimes considered more of a pest than a welcome guest in the garden.

There is no better plant for the night garden. Moonflower vine has bright white flowers that bloom in the evening just as the sun sets that seem to glow in the darkness, filling the garden with an intoxicating fragrance. The massive blooms are about five to six inches in diameter and open in a large trumpet-like fashion. Highly attractive to bats and moths, the Moonflower is a highly aromatic, sweet scented bloom. Overcast days and cool temperatures can prolong the vine's blooms into the morning, but under normal conditions, Moonflowers close with the rising of the sun.

Historically, ancient Mesoamerican people used extracts from the Moonflower plant and other natural resources to help manufacture a useful rubber substance.

These annuals for sun are best planted near a patio or walkway where their scent and flowers can be appreciated. Train your voracious vine to grow up and off of the ground which will prolong and protect the plant's blooms.

*The seeds of the Moonflower plant are highly toxic and should not be ingested.*

Absolutely stunning May 2, 2018

The plant arrived in great condition. It grew quickly and bloomed in just about 3 months. The flowers were huge! I wish I could attach pics.  I saved the last set of seed pods to grow.  I recently decided to plant them near a drainage ditch near my house. Its delightful to watch them grow again this season.  Although the ones I planted in the wild are doing great, the seeds I planted in the container for my own home haven't come to fruition so I'm ordering another!!!

I've tried for years to grow this lovely plant, always from seed.  Just could not make it happen. I was pleased to discover these plants. They arrived on time, in excellent health and are thriving.

I received a well-packged, healthy and nice size plant that took off as soon as it was planted.  It started forming flowers immediately.  I'm expecting my first bloom tonight.  It is climbing my fence at a good rate.  Very pleased!

perfect! August 24, 2015

Young plants were vigorous and large, well packed.  Although my property is mostly wooded, I have a fence which is in the sun for most of the day. The vines grew more slowly due to this, and just bloomed for the first time yesterday, but oh my! how lovely.  Well worth the wait.  I have had no success in the past growing from seed, so these plants were worth the investment.  The Japanese Beetles weren't even slightly interested although the moonflowers are growing near morning glories and roses.  The flowers seem to glow at night and I see bats visiting them.  I will definitely buy these from Growers Exchange again next year.

I received my 4 moonflower vines in an extremely well packed box -- the vines were more established and healthier than expected! I'm delighted.  They are growing outside now -- winding their way up my trellises.  I am looking forward to their quick growth and future blossoms!  Thanks, GROWER'S EXCHANGE for a very professional and caring service!
