Lavender, Summer - Early Fall
Lavandula x intermedia 'Grosso'
'Grosso' Lavender is hardier than other
varieties, and is best appreciated for its sturdy growth habit and ease of drying and preserving. This
works well as a fragrant hedge or an accent when planted with
Joe Pye Weed
. One of the tallest Lavender varieties, 'Grosso' is also deer and rabbit resistant, grows easily in sandy or salty conditions and is very self sufficient. Because its blooming flower stalks are more round than other varieties, 'Grosso' is commonly called "Fat Spike".
Like other Lavenders, 'Grosso' is known as a stress reliever and is added to many shampoos, lotions and Aromatherapy spa products for its soothing effect. Producing huge, profuse blooms, this is commercially preferred over other strains because of its tolerance to cold. Because this is a hybrid, 'Grosso' is sterile and will not produce seed. The best way to propagate is from stem cuttings once the plant is established.
Well drained soil - lavenders will not tolerate poor drainage so add sand if you need to improve the quality of your soil. Most lavender 'deaths' occur because of wet roots. An alkaline soil is best.
They cannot tolerate humidity: damp, still air makes them susceptible to fungus ailments
Lavenders need full sun- 6 to 8 hours of sunshine for these Mediterranean natives
Lavandula x intermedia
'Grosso' is a large, shrubby variety with huge, round flower spikes. This profuse bloomer is often called "Fat Spike" because of its large blooming stems. Perennial in zones 5-8, 'Grosso' is a hybrid and will not produce viable seed.
'Grosso' prefers full sun
If Lavenders could talk they would shout, "don't over water!" Excessive watering promotes disease and Lavenders are very susceptible to root rot from moist soil. When you do water, make sure to water the soil and not the plant, adequately and not excessively.
Well draining soil is the key to a happy Lavender, to help prevent root rot from moist soil.
A terrific border plant, this big bloomer will attract swarms of butterflies and bees which will promote an overall healthier garden. 'Grosso' has an amazing, long-lasting fragrance that is perfect for potpourris, crafts and arrangements.
Pot this lush aromatic and enjoy it indoors all year long! Just place it somewhere that you will brush past it often and release its wonderful perfume and make sure it gets lots of sunlight. Potting your most favorite, fragrant herbs is a great way to beat the dreary doldrums of winter!
is comfortable and lightweight! You'll plant half of you garden before you break a sweat!
Perennial in zones 5-11

A lovely aromatic, 'Grosso' is used commercially to make soaps, lotions and aromatherapy products. Natural oils found in Lavender also help to aid healing after being burned. Try applying Lavender oil to reduce scarring and to help regenerate healthy skin much quicker.
Makes a great ground cover or border plant and will also grow easily in a large pot or container.
This is a more cold hardy variety and is deer, rabbit and drought resistant.
