Our James Farmer's Favorites Herb Collection is a celebration of herb
gardening and Southern hospitality. Garden to table guru and good
friend, James Farmer, has collaborated with us and picked some of his favorite fresh culinary herbs to compliment his book,
A Time To Plant: Southern-Style Garden Living, which is chocked full of recipes, design ideas and more!
We’ve included six lush herb plants, grown by hand on our farm and ready to enjoy in your garden and in your favorite drink or dish! We've included
Lavender ‘Hidcote',
for its beauty in arrangements or as a garnish, and for its wonderful
fragrance and light, floral flavor in drinks and recipes. For a true
Southern experience, we added
‘Kentucky Colonel’ Mint, a robust spearmint that grows effortlessly and is the key component to a real Southern tradition, the Mint Julep.
‘Lemon Sweet Dani’ Basil
was chosen for its delicate citrus tones and lovely blooming spires,
making it perfect for flavoring seafood, salads and garnishing summer
desserts. To share a savory note, we also added our
Rosemary ‘Arp’,
a flavorful, cold hardy, Rosemary that seasons meats, stews and full
flavored desserts. (James loves using the Rosemary twigs as skewers for
adding fruit kebabs to his delectable drinks!) Rounding out his
favorites, are
‘Italian Flat Leaf’ Parsley for its full body flavor and lovely leafy foliage, and
‘English’ Thyme,
a classic culinary herb that grew in his grandmother’s kitchen garden
and of which he has fond, flavorful memories.

In The Kitchen: A Rosemary Tableau

James Farmer is the most creative new personality in the garden living world, combining simple Southern charm with natural beauty from the garden. His tablescapes, arrangements, and recipes are inspired by his love of gardening and upbringing on his family farm in Kathleen, Georgia. His sweet "Southern-chic" designs and fresh take on traditional recipes makes him our absolute favorite authority on all things from garden to table!
Here's a bit more about James from his "About Me" section of his website:
"James was raised "organic" where "farm to table" was a lifestyle
before they became popular notions. He was taught how to pull things
from the family farm and garden to provide much of the food, décor, and
flavor in his home growing up. As a young boy, James became interested
in traditional Southern cooking and heirloom recipes by cooking at the
side of his grandmother who always cooked from a kitchen garden. Through
the years James has revitalized old recipes to make them relevant and
healthier for contemporary tastes and entertaining. As gardening,
entertaining, decorating and cooking join hand in hand to create the
perfect event, James has been well versed in all categories. Not all
gardeners are cooks and not all cooks are gardeners, but both lifestyles
can be melded into one, themed by the garden.

"A vital young voice in the gardening scene teaches a new generation of
Southerners to love gardening and to make it a focal point of their
lifestyle. James Farmer teaches respect for the age-old rules of flower
and vegetable gardening in the Deep South (e.g., May is the time for
pruning), in a fresh voice that resonates love of life and entertaining
at home. Also included are delicious recipes for seasonal meals, as well
as suggestions for floral arrangements and centerpieces."
