Gomphrena globosa

Gomphrena 'Purple', also known as "Globe Amaranth", is a summertime favorite due to its tolerance for heat and humidity.Great for edging and filling beds and patio containers because of its low, upright habit, these heat hardy little annuals are beautiful bloomers. The Gomphrena 'Purple' has clover-like flowering heads which produce beautiful violet blooms that are very attractive to bees and butterflies. Supported by slender, vertical stems with sparse velvety leaves, Gomphrenas  do well in substandard soil conditions and are drought resistant.

Known for their long lasting blooms, these tough little blossoms stand the test of time well in dried arrangements. Even their name, Gomphrena, means "everlasting" in Latin. These popular purple flowers hold their form and beauty so well after harvest, that they are one of the preferred flowers that make up traditional Hawaiian leis. For best results, cut the flowers at the desired length of stem just before they bloom to ensure a longer and stronger dried blossom.

Gomphrenas are also somewhat medicinally significant. Used in Trinidad as a traditional medicinal cure for coughs, the plant possesses expectorant qualities and is also used to treat diabetes.Also used for its aroma and sweet flavor in many Asian teas, Gomphrenas make a delicious ingredient or garnish to your culinary masterpieces!
