The Grower’s Exchange Story
It seems like just yesterday that we opened The Growers Exchange in an abandoned Texaco gas station on a busy urban street corner in Richmond, Virginia. But it was almost 25 years ago. And garden clogs are back en vogue.
Since 1985, we’ve been focused on providing top quality plants and garden-related products in the widest possible selection. For the first 20 years of our existence, we were mostly a brick-and-mortar garden shop with a loyal following of green thumbs who shared our passion. By 2005, we had outgrown our local market, so we closed shop and moved into our new permanent digs right here on the Web.
Now we can provide our tenderly nurtured plants to the entire country. You see, in order for us to control the diversity and quality of the plants we offer, we needed to grow our own. (OK, so we’re kind of perfectionists, but that’s good for the customer.) In 1987, we opened our nursery in Charles City County, 25 miles east of Richmond along the shores of the historic James River. We are also able to buy in from the finest nurseries and greenhouses in the country, and pass their best on to our customers.
We are now based at our facility in Charles City, and have been connecting and exchanging with gardeners all over the country. It is exciting to be able to share the best we grow with such a large and diverse market. It is straight from our farm to your garden!
