The Growers Exchange Story

About Us:

Although it was almost 30 years ago, it seems like yesterday that we opened The Growers Exchange in an abandoned Texaco gas station on a busy urban street corner in Richmond, Virginia.

Since 1985, we've focused on providing top quality herb plants . For the first 20 years, we were a bricks and mortar garden shop with a loyal following of green thumbs who shared our passion. In 1987, we opened our nursery in Charles City County, 25 miles east of Richmond along the shores of the historic James River. We offered our customers a wide range of perennials and houseplants that we grew and knew were top quality.

By 2005, demand for our plants and products had outgrown our local market and we realized it was the ideal time to expand our business to a web-based marketplace. It didn't take long for word to spread among gardening enthusiasts from Maine to California, Texas to Michigan. Our website allowed us to interact with gardeners from across the country and discover what people really wanted to grow, resulting in new friends and loyal customers.

Over the past 10 years, The Growers Exchange has grown with the changing garden trends. Now, when asked what we grow, our answer is HERBS. We had offered herbs as part of our collection, but thanks to customer feedback from across the nation, we're now passionate herb growers who take pride in providing our customers with the best variety and quality herbs in the marketplace.

Our Plants:

The herbs we grow, for the most part, are species plants. We avoid patented plants, therefore you are free to plant and cultivate and pass along to friends and neighbors and enjoy sharing the bounty!

Our Core Values:

We love what we do: growing and providing the finest quality and selection of herbs and helping our customers have gardening success. Every herb we grow and sell is rooted behind our core beliefs. They are firmly engrained in our company culture and reflected in our belief that gardening enriches, empowers and should be incorporated into our daily life.

As part of our core beliefs, we adhere to these principles:

  • Chemical-free gardening
  • Growing non patented plants
  • Growing open-pollinated species plants
  • A free exchange of gardening information with our customers
  • A 'virtually local' business model: As a small, family-owned and operated business, we treat all of our customers as neighbors.

We value your feedback and want you to be a part of our growing community of garden enthusiasts- from first timers to experienced gardeners. Share your stories with us; we'd love to hear from you!
